feeling official

Chances are if the CC on call phone rings, I'll answer it "RA on-duty, this is Katie. . ." like I've answered it for the past two and a half years. Sadly, this potential lapse in role identification is the least of my worries for my first night on call.
But, now that I have 46 keys and two phones for the next week (okay, that's an exaggeration, I really only have 25 keys) I'm starting to feel official. One week from today I will be moved, and I'm sure that will bring a completely new level of understanding. And probably loneliness: I'm used to having somewhere between 27 and 46 eighteen-year-olds surrounding me.
I know that every blog I write is about RA-ing or CC-ing, but that's because it's what fills my heart. I wish I could make people understand how awesome and important residence life is in a college experience. Right now, RA applications are open. We're all wearing buttons that say "Be a Resident Assistant!" We have life-sized cardboard cut-outs of Chewbacca, Edward Cullen, Jack Sparrow, and Stewie from The Family Guy all wearing the same buttons stationed right outside the dining hall with current RAs just waiting to tell everyone about how incredible this opportunity is (and take pictures with the "stars"). It's fun, crazy, and unpredictable. That's how Housing is.
That's why I love it.
Today we had a party to let Megan, the CC who is leaving, know how much she will be missed. Kate and I baked a two-layered cake on Saturday for the occasion. I'm pretty impressed with both of us-- there were only a few mishaps and lots of giggling. Feeling official today has been nice, but this week I've felt happy and blessed. Which are both much better than feeling official.
See? We did an excellent cake-baking job!
