in about 6 weeks when our halls will be at capacity with high school football players, soccer teams, and other conferences, i'll be commenting about how much i hate summer here. but, right now i love the way this summer feels. i love what i'm accomplishing.
i trained my summer housing assistants monday and tuesday. wednesday evening we checked in our first group (50 geology students from missouri) in about 10 minutes. the group arrived 3 hours late-- covered in mud.
wednesday night i made curry for dinner. it turned out about 3x spicier than i had anticipated (noted: less curry paste next time!) but it was super yummy. i have added a rice cooker to my list of needed kitchen items.
i took thursday off-- for the most part. all of the awesome uh women went to a mary kay party hosted by one of the past year's ras. i'm so allergic to so many cosmetics that i was hesitant to let karlee try any of her products on me. at the last minute i decided to go for it and thank heavens i wasn't allergic! kate made cucumber sandwiches and had fresh fruit and yummy treats for us while we were there. it was such a fun break for the women that we decided to do a weekly "putluck lunch." i love my coworkers.
kate just finished something borrowed by emily giffin and had me read it so we can see the movie this weekend. i was pleasantly surprised by this book and giffin's writing skill! i spent most of thursday afternoon sitting outside on the grass outside of my apartment reading.
i tried to replicate the pommes frites from disneyland at dinner. i came close, but not quite. i need a few more ingredients for the dipping sauce. i hate that i love cooking as much as i do-- i've got to be careful or i'll start gaining weight.
today i slept late and the fire alarm went off twice while i was in the shower. the first time, i jumped out (after rinsing out my shampoo) and got dressed even though the alarm stopped. by the time i got out to my living room, the custodial crew was coming back in, so i figured we were safe. not five minutes later, it went off again but i ignored it. i called maintenance after my shower and sure enough, our smoke detector system company was doing some testing. oh, the awesomeness of being the sole person living in a building.
>>> which reminds me, the cedar hall water main was just switched over and my water is yellow-- pee yellow-- from all of the iron in the pipe that it was switched to. ick. it's gross and i can't drink it. it's been this way for almost a week. again, if only all of the residents were here, we would have cycled it through by now.
anyway, after i finally got ready, kate and i ran some errands and went to lunch with ty. it was a lot of fun. we also planned out epic kate and katie adventure to las vegas in a few weeks! i'm so excited! there will be many stories and pictures to follow this event. and after work this afternoon i went to babysit a friend's daughters. three little girls: 5, 3, 9 months.it was mass chaos and a lot of fun. they only live about 7 blocks away so i walked to and from their house. it was great to get out for a while and walk about. everything is so quiet right now.
tomorrow, kate and i are going to see something borrowed. she's calling me when she wakes up to come over for brunch (which, if you have read the book is quite fitting). i'm going to make banana chocolate chip pancakes, eggs, bacon, and hashbrowns. soooo excited!!!
so, for right now, i love the ease of this summer. things are going slowly and i have time to read and write and play the wii and listen to alanis morrisette music as loud as i want. when it gets crazy, this calm will help me welcome it.
