folk band

i have absolutely no musical talent whatsoever. other than wanting to be a famous  singer/songwriter (like carly simon) when i was about 4, i have had no desire to be musical. i found learning to play the recorder in 5th grade an utter waste of energy. i opted out of music classes all through school. when i am forced into singing situations, i whisper or mouth the words. yet, i have held on to the peculiar desire to form a folk duo with my future spouse for a few years now.

it started with the weepies. the weepies are one of my favorite bands with all of their lyrical melancholy happiness. i love the way their songs make me feel: how the words speak what my heart can't articulate, and how i want to cry and smile at the same time. can't go back now is my song for post-grad life, and living in twilight is my song for my resident assistant experience. the weepies are made up of the adorable husband and wife duo, deb talan and steve tannen. they are silly, crazy, fun, and write heart-felt music. i've been in love with their music for years, and every new release still amazes me.

so, when i heard about the submarines. another adorable married couple writing cutesy folk music together trying to save the world, i was hooked on my folk-writing pipe dream. their most popular song, you, me and the bourgeoisie (yes, it was featured on iphone commercials a few years ago). is beautiful and i love the meaning -- and the music video. their, john dragonetti and blake hazard (<<< f. scott fitzgerald's great-granddaughter), love story is so cute: they got together, wrote some music, broke up, wrote some music, fell in love again, and are still writing music. it's their connection and their power. they are muses to each other.

and then there's my past with carly simon, carole king, and joni mitchell. oh, and lisa loeb. i love zooey deschanel and rosie thomas (though i wouldn't exactly call them "folky").

maybe someday i'll marry a multi-instrument-lingual man and he'll teach me how to sing. together, we'll put my poems to music and create a little folk band. i'll wear calico dresses and rainboots. and together, we'll be happy because our music says we are. we'll live in a little residence hall apartment while i cc by day and write music and perform in bars at night. when we have a baby, she'll have her own lullaby that we'll write and sing to her before she's even born. it will be perfect.
