today has been the on-call day from hell. i had 14 calls between 9:00 am and 2:30 pm. which, wouldn't be too strange for an ra on-duty (especially during summer conferences), but the cc on-call phone hardly ever sees this much action.
long story short, we had a flood incident on the second floor of my building which ruined the fire panel on the first floor. so, lots of calls from the call center about the fire panel, lots of calls from maintenance about what's going on, and lots of calls from the fire marshal updating me on whether or not i could stay in my apartment for the night (i can, btw-- thank heavens!).
girls state was checking out in the midst of the fire panel revamp, so they were walking in and out in their formals with their parents. this wouldn't have been a huge problem, except for the fact that the girls are not issued their own keys and are required to leave and enter the building with their leaders, so the maintenance men kept stopping their work to let the girls in. then doors were being propped open with gatorade bottles and rocks. funny enough, bright seventeen-year-old girls turn speechless when someone in a name tag with lots of keys and two phones tells them to do (or not to do) something. i wish i had that effect on all residents-- just kidding, sort of.
after the last call and as the girls state participants made their way to eccles a to get their box lunches and board buses, i locked myself out of my apartment in my mad dash out the door. this was the second time i locked myself out today-- the first was at midnight when i didn't want to wake brandon, who was sleeping on my couch, by turning on the lights. ironically enough, i had to wake him up to get back in anyway. i couldn't find my key anywhere and i stood in kate's doorway nearly in tears returning her key to her (since i borrowed it to get back into my apartment). my laptop, rigby, who is dying a slow and painful death (good little macbook-- surviving five years!), had decided to harbor my key card as, i can only assume, revenge against my recent shopping for a new macbook pro.
at 5:00 pm all of the girls state leaders were gone, we'd walked through their suites to check for damages, all repairs in my building were completed, and i returned to my apartment and had a brownie with black raspberry ice-cream for dinner-- i had earned it.
it's days like today that i realize something awesome: not everyone is cut out for this kind of unpredictable chaos--4:00 am crisis calls, floods, alarms, etc. luckily, it gives me energy and i love it.
AH! no kidding on call from Hell! So glad you made it through! I've moved into the dorms and I have forgotten how tiring it is to be with the residents all the time! but you're right - not everyone can do this and it is refreshing!
