i've never been a fan of interdisciplinary programs or the idea of a "create your own degree." the whole idea seemed to be based upon the choose your own adventure books i would read as a child. when one path didn't suffice, i would back up and choose another. it frustrated me that the the first path didn't allow me to read the entire book. i hated skipping around in the text, i wanted a linear path to the end of the story. needless to say, i only owned one or two choose your own adventure books in my library of children's literature.
but now, nearly twenty years later, i'm opting for the choose your own adventure degree. i guess sometimes you have to eat your words. i'm excited to do a more self-guided program and challenge myself to create a final capstone that is uniquely me--and ultimately skip all of the stuff that maybe doesn't mean something to my story.
i went to an info session at west campus last night to learn about new college's interdisciplinary program. the program that is going to allow me to study gender studies, women's studies, human rights/social justice with higher ed to create exactly what i want in my masters degree. not only is this going to make me more marketable in the res life field, it's also going to be a program that won't just give me a taste of social justice, but a focus on it and that's exactly what i want.
oh, and this program is an hour shuttle ride away on the beautiful west campus. i love west campus. west feels very much like suu: it's small, cozy, and familiar. i'm excited to get to spend time there.
